As many of you know by now, I am spending the month of September in Germany on retreat at the Buchinger Clinic in Bad Pyrmont. The clinic is famous for its approach to holistic medicine and has been practicing these ideals for more than 90 years – long before integrated medicine was the trend of the day in America. These ideals have gradually become more accepted in the U.S., but they are still almost always secondary to the standard clinical approach that is taught in medical programs. While both points of view are viable and necessary, the Buchinger Clinic focuses on nutrition, exercise, and mind-body therapies as the primary means of treatment. Massage, meditation, hydro-therapies, acupuncture, yoga, Qui-gong, therapeutic fasting, and organic diets are just some of the treatment offerings. This is an immersion for me in these principles, and I’m excited to experience the benefits. Everything is very closely supervised by the medical staff, and I feel like I’m in good hands.
Also while I’m here, I have a chance to enjoy practicing the organ and learning some new music. I met a wonderful woman, Sister Irmgeld, who is helping to arrange practice time for me at the Stadtkirche (State Church.) They have a wonderful organ, and it’s within walking distance of the clinic. There are a couple of pianos at the clinic, too, so I’m all set. My plan is to learn some Bach, Mendelssohn, and Reger – all German composers while I’m in Germany!
Please check back for up-dates. I’ll be posting some pictures and up-date you on my progress. In the meantime, take good care.
